Bangladesh Nutrition Priorities Policy Seminar

On June 1, 2016 (Wednesday), Copenhagen Consensus Center and Centre for Research and Information (CRI) co-organized the “Bangladesh Nutrition Priorities: Policy Seminar”at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon, Dhaka. A lot of progress has been made in recent years, yet malnutrition remains a challenge. Publishing new research on nutrition solutions in Bangladesh, and bringing together key decision-makers and academics to discuss the policy framework, the Policy Seminar provided an opportunity for a proactive and focused discussion on nutrition priorities and policy options.

The seminar was attended by, among others, the Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Mr. Mohammed Nasim. The discussion was moderated by Professor Abdul Bayes, Director, BRAC-RED who also leads the BRAC-LANSA (Leveraging Agriculture for Nutrition in South Asia) Team in Bangladesh.

Attended by the most important stakeholders and experts of nutrition, from the government, NGOs and international agencies, the Policy Seminar discussed some of the smart solutions to addressing nutrition issues of Bangladesh. In a nutshell, the research suggested how and where to spend valuable resources for addressing such nutritional challenges as eliminating malnutrition, stunting, wasting and other nutrition problems.

After the research findings were highlighted to the esteemed participants, policy perspectives and experiences from the Government of Bangladesh were shared by the Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Mr. Syed Monjurul Islam and the Director General of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Professor Dr. Deen Md. Hurul Huq.

There were two separate panel discussions on nutrition. The first panel discussed the benefits of good nutrition for the economy. The panelists were economist Dr. Jonathan Rose, and Dr. Nasreen Khan, Head of Policy and Advocacy, WaterAid Bangladesh and Member Secretary, Technical Committee, National Plan of Action on Nutrition.

The second panel discussed nutrition for women, children and families. The panelists included economist Professor Mahmud Khan, Mr. Md. Humayun Khalid, Secretary, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education and Dr. Raisul Haque, Head of Nutrition, BRAC.
