3. Quality Education
3.4 Mainstreaming Technical & Vocational Education (TVE)
Present government has a target to increase enrollment in Technical and Vocational Education by 20 percent by 2020. Numerous initiatives including big reform projects, setting of high standard polytechnic schools, college and institutes and new curriculum and resource development are currently under implementation. Enrollment rate in TVE now stands at 15 percent; was only 1.8 when this government took over power.
Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) of Ministry of Education (MoE) offers technical education, runs a total of 118 institutions with capacity of serving
99,108 students per year. These institutions offer Certificate (SSC & HSC equivalent), Diploma and Degree program. There are 64 Technical School and Colleges (TSCs) for Certificate Program, 49 Polytechnic Institute for Diploma and 3 Engineering Colleges for Degree program. Four Polytechnic Institutes for women have been set up in four divisions - Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Khulna. Another four Polytechnic Institutes for women will be set up in Sylhet, Barisal, Mymensingh and Rangpur divisions in phases. Activities for setting up 100 TSCs are underway in 100 upazilas (sub-district) while another 389 TSCs will be established in the second phase.
