5. Youth and Sports
The presence of a strong sports-culture attracts youth to participate in different disci- plines. Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) is providing support and funding to central and local sports associations to hunt and train young talents, organize local, national and international sports events. National Sports Council (NSC), develops sports infra- structure, allocates fund to sports federations/associations and organize quality train- ing programs to develop sports at local and national level.
5.1 Infrastructure Development
Since 2009, initiatives have been taken to build new stadium, sports complex, gymnasium and upgrade the old structures. Sixty-six new infrastructures were built while 102 old ones were upgraded during the period of 2016-17. Divisional stadiums of Dhaka, Narayanganj, Khulna, Chittagong are upgraded to international standard. New international standard stadiums were built in Sylhet and Cox’s Bazar. Government has taken an initiative to
build one mini-stadium at each of the 487 upazilas in 64 districts to encourage sports activity at the grassroots. Construction work of 131 mini-stadiums is currently under way.
5.2 High Profile Event Hosting
Sports associations regularly arrange national, local leagues and age group com- petitions at the grassroots. Apart from that, the country hosts regional and inter- national sports events. Bangladesh, in the recent years hosted international sports
