CRI at Eradicate Extreme Poverty Day

On 31st May 2014, Stimulating Household Improvements Resulting in Economic Empowerment (“Shiree”) organized a day long fair at Bashundhara Convention Centre, Dhaka to observe Eradicate Extreme Poverty Day 2014. The event was organized to raise awareness on the subject of extreme poverty by Shiree in association with Manusher Jonno Foundation and World Food Programme (WFP).

Shiree is a challenge fund supported by the Bangladesh government, UKAID and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. With the aim of eradicating extreme poverty from Bangladesh by 2021, they have come up with a Manifesto for the Extreme Poor which has received 184 endorsements from the private sector, NGOs, donors and civil society actors till date.

Centre for Research and Information (CRI) participated in the day long fair having its own stall. Research materials prepared by CRI relevant to the theme of the day (development) were kept on display for dissemination among fair visitors. CRI’s Executive Director spoke on the occasion and highlighted how CRI can contribute on the subject of extreme poverty reduction.

Throughout the day, CRI members recorded a number of video interviews with participants and visitors to the fair. The questions that were asked included, among others: What the participants/visitors think about initiatives like the fair and what difference such events can make to the target of eradicating extreme poverty from Bangladesh by 2021; what the biggest obstacles to eradicating extreme poverty are in light of the ground realities; what steps can be taken to expedite the process of eradicating extreme poverty; what role the youths can play in this regard and so on.

A small documentary type video is now being prepared with the footages to be available for viewing soon. Additionally, in line with its emphasis on youth engagement and research on development issues, CRI has plans to hold either a Policy Café and/or Let’s Talk soon on the issue of poverty reduction to facilitating dialogue between the policy makers, stakeholders and youths.
