CRI praised by Democracy International

On 9 June, 2016 (Thursday), a six-member delegation of Washington-based Democracy International (DI) met with Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her National Parliament Office in Dhaka. The team was led by Mr. Glenn Cowan, co-founder and CEO of DI. During the meeting, HPM Sheikh Hasina said that Centre for Research and Information (CRI) was founded to conduct research on different issues of Bangladesh, especially politics and development. The DI team highly praised the work of CRI, saying that its personnel are very brilliant at intellectual level. In particular, the delegation lauded the research works and products of CRI.

The HPM pointed out that when CRI first started operating in 2001 under a separate arrangement, the then BNP-Jamaat government raided their offices and seized 60 computers and 300 files without any reasonable cause or provocation. She highlighted the need for sound research to support good policymaking and political decision making. Joint General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League, Ms. Dipu Moni MP and Central Publicity and Publications Secretary of the party Mr. Hasan Mahmud MP were present during the meeting.

DI supports political systems around the world to be more responsive, inclusive, and competitive by developing and using new knowledge, tools, and approaches. In their longstanding involvement with Bangladesh’s political parties, DI has provided training and enhanced skills of thousands of political workers from all major political parties, including Bangladesh Awami League. DI has also been working with CRI closely on research issues. A team from CRI is currently undertaking an extensive research training programme on public opinion research from DI’s Bangladesh chapter. Previously too, they have provided training and arranged a number of seminars and workshops on related areas for CRI staff and Awami League workers.
